How a Chicago Booth Alumnus Funded her MBA

Paying for your MBA is much more than school fees. As you may know, the MBA experience is more than just building DCF models and structuring LBOs – it’s also expanding your network. Factoring in tuition, living expenses, and the â€Å"additional travel and getting to know your classmates† line item (which took me to Ibiza, Israel, Russia, Mexico, and more) – the total bill can edge close to $200k. Funding the MBA is no joke, so understanding your full range of options is critical. Deciding to do an MBA Knowing that an MBA would set me back quite a bit, I curated a list of schools that fit my criteria for business school and set out to apply. I took a long time carefully getting to know each of the schools I was interested in going on campus for prospective student open houses, chatting with current students, and getting a sense of the â€Å"vibe† for each program. While not necessarily contributing to saving for the MBA, this was a vital step in choosing the right program for me, and feeling confident about moving forward. Knowing what I was paying for and why, was equally as important to figuring out how to pay for it. Before School Instead of quitting my job months in advance of business school, I continued to work my job until just a couple of weeks before school started to pull in those last few paychecks. Some of my classmates did a pre-MBA internship the summer before starting business school. Along with my Chicago Booth offer letter, came a sizeable scholarship from the school. But school scholarships are just one source of scholarships. There are thousands of nonprofits and other organizations that offer scholarships to students. I didn’t explore these when I was going to school, but really wish I had. A few small checks can really add up, and in many cases you can use some of the same material you sent in to apply to business school. During School I worked while in school both on a startup of my own, but also in consulting capacities for other companies, which helped me pay for living and other expenses. I was offered the opportunity to TA an entrepreneurship class one term, which was a win-win by providing me with supplemental income and the chance to meet other folks in the space I was involved in. You’ll find that many of your classmates are engaged in side internships, working on their own companies, and dabbling in other part time gigs. Don’t be afraid to start immediately applying what you’re learning inside the classroom for pay outside the classroom. At some MBA programs, you can even postpone a term, or double-up on classes during one term, to allow for a second full-time internship. Depending on your visa, you can also work up to 20 hours or more while in school. And you’ll likely make a lot of new friends being a bartender at the local pub! Whether your MBA was in the long term game plan or a last minute trigger pull, you can develop a funding strategy that will work for you. Talk to other applicants, current students, and alumni for ideas and get creative! Whitney Morgan is a Business Development Manager at Prodigy Finance. She worked in cyber security engineering and venture capital before getting her MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. She then worked in early stage startups in a variety of industries before joining the Prodigy team. Popular Culture As Defined By Alexandre O. Philippe

Much of what we know comes from popular culture. It’s inescapable and it shapes our modern society. In simpler terms, popular culture could either offend or challenge social norms brought on by society on what is new, hip, and trends to be followed. Popular culture as defined by Alexandre O. Philippe, â€Å" is a universal language that manages in all of its seemingly trivial glory to make us dream and smile. It says something about us, about our better nature and isn’t it time for us to respect it, cherish it, and learn to preserve it?† Growing up in the modern age, popular culture has had a huge impact on my life. Being a part of the newest technology generation, society seems to be driven by what’s new, what’s the latest trend, or what’s the latest issue. Now more than ever, popular culture seems to have taken over the new medium for how people understand news and media worldwide within the numerous social platforms such as Youtube, television, Facebook, and popular magazines, as a newer and sometimes more effective way to share and understand news and ideas. To some, popular culture serves to over exemplify the ridiculousness of a culture. However, popular culture does not aim to destroy or diminish the values set up with what’s new, popular, or trending; but aims to strengthen the cultural differences valued upon each country by offering new and creative insights that mayShow MoreRelatedPopular Culture As Defined By Alexandre O. The Gun Control Debate in America - 1159 Words

GUN CONTROL DEBATE IN AMERICA Gun control has become a very hot topic of contention in America today. What seems to echo here are two words: â€Å"guns† and â€Å"crime†, in a sense that are these words mutually exclusive to each other? Does the use of guns ultimately lead to crime? On the flip side, have the laws in America restricting firearm use been effective enough to protect the lives of the citizens? These are some of the questions that strike the hearts of many when the gun control debate music is played. However, the debate about gun control is not new. Guns as we know them to be are very powerful and dangerous weapons. They are instruments that can be used to inflict severe harm and can even lead to death. However, amidst this fact of†¦show more content†¦Flowing from my analogy about the big pot, I would like to further present the American context that as we know has two main political ideologies, the republicans and the democrats. On one hand, history has shown that the republicans have for a long time supported the pro gun movement. The reason is because of their intrinsic nature of conservatism, and the fact that they are backed by the national rifle association which happens to be a key player in this debate. On the other hand, Democrats are known to be supporters of the gun control debate. This is because of the increased sale in guns after the 9/11 attacks; hence, they try to cavers on the issue. In this regard, it seems notable that the republicans are on the front row. Now, from my little knowledge of political philosophy, government as a concept refers to a constituted body that helps to keep and protect the basic rights of its citizens, and also to make laws that ensure that everyone in the society is safe. Therefore, the gun control issue cannot be over emphasized for the American government or any other government on a larger scale. One of the questions surrounding the gun control debate in America is to ascertain whether or not the second amendment grants the freedom of firearm ownership to common citizens. The amendment however, seems to support the possession of firearm by the militia. The social perspective has to do with the citizens and the society. What people wear is what makes them different from everybody else. Most girls like to wear skimpier clothes that show their shoulders and stomachs, but this rule doesnt let them. Just because a shirt has profanity, vulgar suggestions, sexual connotations, drugs or alcohol on it, doesnt mean that it shouldnt be worn. People try expressing themselves through the slogans on their clothes. I dont feel anything is wrong with these shirts and Im not offended by them, nor should anybody else be. Dressing for the weather is really important to do, especially when its extremely hot out and there arent air conditioners in the school that work properly. When its hot people dont like to wear a lot of clothes. Seeing the shoulders of guys and girls in school isnt going to hurt anyone. They should just be able to wear spaghetti strap shirts, tube tops, single strap shirts and shirts that tie around the neck. Pants shouldnt be worn when its hot, you cant concentrate on your work, because you are only thinking about how hot it is and how much longer until you can go home and put on clothes that make you feel less hot. Of course, no one wants to wear shorts that go down half way to their knees, they are just plain ugly and most stores only provide you with short shorts. What people wear is not a distraction. Pajamas are comfortable and should be able to be worn. Its not a distraction, they are just clothes. A lot of people get distracted easily and the school is just blaming it on what people wear. Also, girls can wear shirts that go down to the middle of their chests and not have anything said to them about it. When a girl has a little bit of their stomach exposed they are sent home to change or just yelled at. I know because this happened to me. Thats just not right at all. The things that actually do distract people in this school are approved and the things that do not distract people are disapproved. Ways to solve this problem are, talk to the person in charge of the school or you can just ignore the rule. Someone could go talk to the principle of the school to see if there was a way to change the rule and let people wear some of the clothing that they want and feel comfortable in. Robert Frost Essays (878 words) - Robert Frost,

Robert Frost Stopping by woods on a snowy evening. Many people consider Robert Frost to be one of America's greatest poets, and one of his best known poems is Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. In the poem, Frost describes a person stopping just outside of town in a wooded area with his horse. He stops for a moment to appreciate the wonder of the world that he has spent so much time in, something that he may not have done much in his younger years. The horse could be a symbol of the pressures of the rest of the civilized world. The horse nudges the speaker on as if to ask if there is some mistake, just as society might nudge someone into movement and not understand the necessity of stopping to smell the roses. The last three lines of the poem could be the realization that, although the speaker might like to stay in the woods much longer, there are responsibilities that must be attended to and many things that must be completed before the final rest, death, takes him. The poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening is, therefore, an allegory of life showing the need to enjoy life, the pressures that often keep us from enjoying life, and the unfortunate fact, that most people do not realize what is gone before it is too late. In the hustle and bustle of today's society, it is often difficult to appreciate the world around us. Many times, due to the pace of our lives, the purity and beauty of nature is often lost in the shuffle. Frost, through his poem may be pointing out that there is more than just the nine to five. The wonder of life, the falling of the leaves, the smell of a flower, the touch of a friend; all of these things are what makes life worth living. These are the little things that people mention when reminiscing of the past. The speaker of the poem stands in the cold and admires the beauty that surrounds him, a beauty that he passed without notice on untold number of occasions, and although he would like to stay, the pressures that have caused his inattention in the past are soon to encroach again. Frost, in line 7, may be using the symbolism of the horse nudging the speaker as if to ask if there is some mistake to show the pressures that are placed on us through our daily lives: society, family, and fiscal solvency. In other words, we must resist the temptation to slow down so that we can be valuable members of society, provide for our family and have the material wealth to show others of our prowess. Frost seems to be advising that, although one must normally succumb to these pressures, one must make time to revel in the joy of life, lest the chance be taken away. Frost is showing in a very poignant way that life is too short not to celebrate in the awesome beauty of the world around us. The last three lines of this poem are symbolic of the realization that, between being born and dying, there are many things to do. Frost may be showing that, like so many of us, he realizes that the completion of responsibilities is the only way to enjoy the pleasures of life. The fact that Frost repeats the last line and miles to go before I rest gives a sense of weariness to the reader. It shows the terrible price that we all pay, the price of our lives committed to the service of someone else. What a wonderful society we have wrought that indentured servitude is accepted, and the beauty of life is something only sampled in between requirements of our taskmasters. We live our lives through a series of benchmarks. I must graduate high school. I must get a college degree. I must find a spouse. I must start a family. I must get that promotion. I must show my boss that I am worth that raise. Then, when our youth, usefulness, and worth to those we seemed to find so important is gone, we are allowed to
